| The
biggest reason Jean Varda might be forgotten as an artist is that
the Bay Area has no collective body of his work. Varda's collages
are dispersed throughout California and other parts of the world in
private homes.
I recently learned of
the existence of a Lost Album with 50+ original, one-of-a-kind
paintings and drawings by Jean Varda from 1939-1940. It is being
put on Ebay.
I have started a project
to purchase the Lost Album by raising funds from the community.
To prevent the Lost
Album from being lost to the public by it being sold to a private
collector, I am trying to obtain it for a non-profit organization
for the use and pleasure of all. The owners of the Scrapbook are
willing to offer it for a fixed price of $8000. If the funds can
be secured, the Lost Album won't be put on auction.
This unique chance to
buy the collection of over 50 original one-of-a-kind Jean Varda
sketches and drawings is a great opportunity.
Obtaining the Lost
Album is a chance for Sausalito to commemorate the artistic
reputation of Jean Varda.
If the Lost Album
goes to a private collector, a piece of Varda's cultural history
will be lost. The Lost Album should be public property, where
it will be available to all. The Scrapbook needs to be preserved
and be accessible to future generations.
Sausalito has a real
historic treasure in Jean Varda. It would be unfortunate if up-coming
generations of Sausalitans, and others, were to miss out on relevant
cultural information concerning one of our community's most influential
artists.
You can contribute to
securing the Lost Album by sending a tax deductable check
(payable to Cinefemme - our fiscal sponsor) and mail to The Jean
Varda Project. P.O. Box 3126 Sausalito, CA. (415) 331-6203.
